Fowey Estuary - History of Inspiration

Turner produced a painting of the mouth of the estuary including the Polruan Blockhouse in 1820.

The blockhouse can also be seen in this painting by Southall in 1923.

It also seems in little doubt that the Revd. Audrey knew the area well.

Bill & Ben are clearly based on the engines that worked at the Par China Clay factory.

The railway is still in existence and links the China Clay Works and the harbour up river from Fowey.

The best possible view is from the beer garden of the Fisherman's Arms at Golant where the single line track is only a few metres away and the trains run over a bridge at the entrance to the small harbour.

Great for children of all ages, but as there is no timetable you may have to wait a long long time to see the engines.

The Fowey estuary has a long history of inspiring Authors and Artists.

The literary history of the estuary is even more famous. Daphne Du Maurier, Leo Walmsley, Sir Arthur Quiller Couch, Kenneth Graeme all have close links and their inspirations can be seen around every corner.

"Bill & Ben are identical twins. They have the same cheeky grin and work mostly betwen the clay pits of the Sodor China Clay Company and the Big Harbour."
